Friends met with their MP to discuss refugees

by Tara Craig 27th November 2015

A group of High Wycombe Quakers recently met their member of parliament to discuss the refugee crisis.

Friends had what they described as ‘a frank and positive meeting’ with Steve Baker MP at the Conservative party offices in High Wycombe, on 6 November.

A number of key issues were addressed. Among these were the provision of safe and legal routes for refugees, and a local petition to resettle fifty refugee families – or 200 individuals – in Buckinghamshire (on top of the 20,000 government refugee quota).

Friends suggested using empty properties and vacant offices as refugee housing. They also discussed the possibility of converting a brown-field site into a housing project.

‘Steve expressed his concern about the need to differentiate between refugees and economic migrants, linking housing, finance and the fairness of the system in ascertaining how many genuine refugees it is economically possible to take in’, Friends reported.
