Reflections on peace at Quaker memorial

Friends marked the UN International Day of Peace at the Quaker Service memorial

Friends gathered in worship earlier this week at the Quaker Service Memorial to mark the United Nations International Day of Peace.

Thirty Friends from eight Local Meetings met at the memorial, in the National Memorial Arboretum, Staffordshire, on Sunday 20 September.

Anthony Wilson, a Quaker Service Memorial trustee, told the Friend: ‘We reflected on the suffering being experienced in Syria and the Yemen, amongst other places, and our call to contribute to the relief of people in desperate need, and – which could be harder – to identify how we could be colluding in the oppression which leads to these violent conflicts.’

Anthony added: ‘Autumn colours are coming to the Arboretum, and berries and fruit will be attracting birdlife. Our calm and restful setting contrasted with the chaos and confusion of those trying to escape the impact of war in their home countries.’
