Recognition for Repair Café
A repair café which involves Quakers was shortlisted for a 'Green Heart Hero Award'
Horsham Repair Café in West Sussex, with which local Friends are involved, was shortlisted for one of the ‘Green Heart Hero Awards’, presented at a ceremony at parliament on 13 March.
Local MP Jeremy Quin nominated the Repair Café in the ‘Community Inspiration’ category, in recognition of work to encourage people to upcycle or repair items, thus conserving resources and reducing waste.
Resident Friend Helen Wittington introduced a monthly refill facility at Horsham Meeting House several years ago. She estimates that over that time more than 4,000 bottles, which would otherwise have been thrown away, have been saved.
In 2017, when Carrie Cort of Sussex Green Living was looking to establish the Repair Café, the Meeting house was considered an excellent choice with its already running refill facility. Horsham Meeting concluded that participation would fit in well with the Canterbury Commitment to a low carbon, sustainable community.
