Rachel Brett gives Swarthmore Lecture
The 2012 Swarthmore Lecture was entitled 'Snakes and Ladders'
The Swarthmore Lecture: ‘Snakes and Ladders’ was given by Rachel Brett to a packed and appreciative audience in the Large Meeting House on Saturday evening. Rachel talked of her work on human rights at the Quaker United Nations Office in Geneva.
In her talk, Rachel stressed the ‘quiet processes’ that guide Quaker advocacy in Geneva. She also used personal reflections on specific work and achievements, such as outlawing the use of child soldiers and advocating for conscientious objectors and women in prison, to illuminate the way in which these quiet processes have been put into action.
(A review of the longer, book, version of her talk will be published in a forthcoming issue of the Friend. This is available in the Quaker Bookshop at Friends House.)
