QUNO updates CO guide
Booklet last updated in 2015 looks at how conscientious objection is recognised and protected.
Quaker United Nations Office (QUNO) has released an updated edition of its booklet International Standards on Conscientious Objection to Military Service. The guide includes information on the ways in which conscientious objection (CO) to military service has been recognised within the UN system and is protected under human rights treaties and mechanisms.
These include recognising COs’ right as part of ‘the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion’ enshrined in Article 18 of both the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. The updated 2021 edition covers developments in international standards that have occurred since 2015, the year of the last edition.
