Quakers say no to Cambo Oil Field
'According to the letter, the climate impacts of opening this new oil field would be "devastating".'
Britain Yearly Meeting (BYM) has signed a joint open letter urging the government to reject the new Cambo Oil Field off the Scottish coast and end support for all coal, oil and gas developments across the UK. This is vital if the UK is going to meet its targets on tackling the climate crisis, said BYM on its Quakers in Britain Facebook page.
According to the letter, the climate impacts of opening this new oil field would be ‘devastating’.
‘In the first phase alone, developers want to extract 170 million barrels of oil, the emissions from which are equivalent to running a coal power station for 16 years. That is just the beginning. The field is expected to operate until 2050 – the point by which your government has committed to reaching net zero emissions’, reads the letter, organised by Friends of the Earth.
Approving the Cambo Oil Field will send ‘a clear message’ at the United Nations Conference of Parties (COP26) in November that ‘this government is not serious about climate action’, the campaigners maintain.
They also point out that the International Energy Agency has said that to meet the 1.5°C target in the Paris Agreement, there should be no more development of new oil, gas, or coal. The amount of oil and gas in fields already in the UK will ‘exceed our share of emissions in relation to the Paris climate goals’, they say.
