Quakers are continuing to urge the government to drop its plans to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda.

Fred Ashmore, of the Quaker Asylum and Refugee Network (QARN), said: ‘We in QARN steadfastly hope that this government will find a way to dump the Rwanda flights policy which flies in the face of the Refugee Convention as well as provoking outrage internationally.’

The plans are now being challenged in the High Court by asylum seekers along with the Public and Commercial Services Union, Care4Calais and Detention Action.

The Royal Courts of Justice hearing – which started on 5 September – was expected to last for five days, with a second hearing brought by Asylum Aid due in October.

Decisions on both claims are expected at the same time but could take months, especially if either side appeals all the way up to the Supreme Court. David Forbes, from QARN, said on the Quakers in Britain website: ‘There is still a long road to travel.’

QARN has also raised the issue of malaria protection, which it says is ‘among the many legal challenges to the government’s policy’. According to QARN’s website, ‘This danger is worth mentioning to anyone in immgration removal centres, Malaria is endemic in Rwanda. Up to 20% of children die of it before age five. Those who remain are mostly immune. However new arrivals who have not previously suffered it are likely to get it, unless they are protected.’
