Welsh Friends celebrated Earth Day this week at a gathering at Cardiff Meeting House. The event on 22 April was one of many around the UK marking Earth Day’s fifty-fifth anniversary.

Support for the day has grown steadily since it began in 1970, with 6,000 individual events taking place in 100 countries this year. With the theme of ‘Our Power, Our Planet’, Earth Day 2025 is calling for ‘everyone to unite around renewable energy so we can triple clean electricity by 2030’.

Kathleen Rogers, president of Earthday.org, said: ‘This Earth Day, communities worldwide will be holding vital conversations about renewable energy implementation, not only as an essential lever in addressing climate change but also as a key step towards a resilient and prosperous future.’

Global events included: community roundtable discussions; climate lessons; citizen science activities; cultural, faith and arts events; and environmental ‘clean-ups’.

Cheltenham Friends also chose the day to hold a vigil in solidarity with six young women arrested at a Youth Demand welcome talk at Westminster Meeting House last month.
