‘Rejoice in the splendour of God’s continuing creation.’ Quakers’ message for Earth Day.

Friends are getting ready to celebrate Earth Day with this year’s theme of ‘invest in our planet’. As numerous Quakers flock to Westminster to join Extinction Rebellion’s ‘The Big One’ – timed to coincide with the international day – Muswell Hill Meeting will be hosting a family Earth Day event in its garden.

According to the Woodbrooke Learning and Research team, which co-organised the event, it is a much-needed opportunity to celebrate the environment. ‘Facing the climate crisis as a family can be anxiety-provoking. Re-connecting with nature and like-minded people in this fun outdoor session can help rejuvenate us.’

Quoting Advices & queries 42, the team said: ‘We will “Rejoice in the splendour of God’s continuing creation”... Igniting our curiosity through creative forest school activities, activating all our senses.’

Now in its fifty-third year, Earth Day on 22 April takes place in more than 190 countries around the globe and is often marked by parties, parades, protests and rallies. This year will also feature major ‘clean-ups’ across the world, including one in the city of Cape Coral in Florida. Five thousand volunteers are expected to help tackle the remnants of trash and debris left behind in the wake of Hurricane Ian.

The Quaker Arts Network exhibition, the Loving Earth Project, will also have some panels on display in California the day after, to mark Sacramento Earth Day.
