Friends joined a nationwide day of action

Friends were among those who joined a nationwide day of action against fossil fuels on 1 June. The action was organised by campaigning group Reclaim the Power.

Crawshawbooth Friend Hilary Whitehead spent three days at a Reclaim the Power action camp close to the RWE npower-owned Didcot power station in Oxfordshire. She was one of more than 250 protesters, who she described on her blog as ‘like-minded people who feel angry with governments and corporations and the system of domination and power they have created’.

In addition to protesting at Didcot, campaigners also targeted David Cameron’s constituency office, London PR agencies representing fossil fuel and nuclear companies, a World Coal Association conference, and the Department of Energy and Climate Change.

Two members of the Quaker Peace & Social Witness (QPSW) staff – Sam Walton and Sunniva Taylor – also took part in the day of action in a personal capacity.

Sunniva, the QPSW sustainability and peace programme manager, told the Friend: ‘QPSW is committed to supporting Friends to take action about energy and climate injustice. We are very glad to see an increasing number of people – including Friends – taking creative action to challenge the power of the fossil fuel industry.’
