'The political leadership from the major countries must raise their ambition and multiply to unimaginable levels their financial commitment.'

East Kent Quakers welcomed Friend Liz Cooper last month as she cycled from Broadstairs to Canterbury Meeting House as part of a relay leading up to the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in November.

The Friend from Broadstairs Meeting was taking part in the relay organised by the Young Christian Climate Network

Wendy Oliver, clerk of Canterbury Meeting, told the Friend that the November conference marks the ‘first time that countries must submit renewed [climate] commitments, following the actions they had agreed to at the 2015 Paris Agreement’. She said it is ‘vital… that the level of commitments match the level of ambition needed to limit warming to two degrees. In addition to the importance of individual efforts, the political leadership from the major countries must raise their ambition and multiply to unimaginable levels their financial commitment if the countries most affected by climate change are not to lose trust in the international process’.
