Quakers given award for pay transparency

The Religious Society of Friends has been awarded a Pay Compare Mark

The Religious Society of Friends has been recognised for its commitment to fair pay practices with the award of a Pay Compare Mark.

The mark is given to employers who disclose the gap between their highest and lowest paid workers on the website of the Pay Compare charity: www.paycompare.org.uk.

A submission from Britain Yearly Meeting (BYM) for Quakers in Britain shows there are two pay scales for those based in or outside London. Both have a maximum of 1:4 ratio between the highest and lowest paid member of staff.

This results in an overall ratio for BYM employees of 1:4.7 (one to four point seven), which covers all staff employed by the central body of the organisation, those of its commercial hospitality business, and those employed regionally at places such as Swarthmoor Hall in Cumbria.

The 1:4.7 ratio refers to salary arrangements for the calendar year 2017 and is calculated on a full-time basis. BYM have a longstanding policy that no employee on their London pay scale should be paid more than four times more than any other. Staff at all levels based outside London are paid at eighty-five per cent of the London scale, resulting in an overall ratio of 1:4.7.

Paul Parker, recording clerk of Britain Yearly Meeting, said: ‘Quakers have been calling on the government to do more to tackle economic inequality. So, it’s only right that we are transparent about how we share financial rewards within our own organisation.’

The 1:4.7 ratio covers the 177 (or 142.59 full-time equivalent) members of staff employed by Quakers in Britain, the central organisation of the Religious Society of Friends in Britain. It does not include workers employed by Local and Area Meetings, who are responsible for their own employee affairs. It does not include contract workers, who are paid at least the relevant Living Wage rate.
