Quakers back Climate and Nature Bill
Quakers are supporting the Climate and Nature (CAN) Bill
Quakers are supporting the Climate and Nature (CAN) Bill, which will have its second reading in Parliament next week.
The Quaker Support for Climate Action group is backing the bill by holding a Meeting for Worship on the morning of the second reading on 24 January in Parliament Square. According to the group, the bill ‘takes responsibility for our overseas footprint – both emissions and ecological.’ It also ‘prioritises nature in decision-making, and ends fossil fuel production and imports as rapidly as possible’.
According to the campaign group Zero Hour, the CAN Bill will ensure the UK meets its international commitments on climate and nature by 2030, by making sure the UK cuts emissions fairly and fully, to stay within its share of the 1.5C carbon budget. It will also ensure the UK not only halts but also reverses the destruction of nature by 2030, and will involve UK people in deciding the fairest way forward through a citizen’s assembly.
Written by leading scientists and supported by 192 MPs, fifty-four peers, 374 local councils, 804 organisations, and 59,723 UK citizens, ‘the CAN Bill is a historic piece of legislation that will make the UK into a true world leader on tackling the climate and nature crises’, it states.
The private members’ bill was presented to Parliament on 16 October 2024, led by Roz Savage, Liberal Democrat MP for South Cotswolds.
