The group of Quakers who hosted a tent at Glastonbury Festival featured on the BBC programme Songs of Praise last week.

Reverend Kate Bottley asked Jon Martin, from Britain Yearly Meeting (BYM), why this year, ‘for the first time ever, the Quakers pitched a tent for silent worship at one of the loudest events in the UK’. Jon Martin said: ‘We are known for silence, but often we use the word “stillness” because it’s not an absolute silence, and we think we can create a space where it is quiet. Also, we’re quite at home here: early Quakers used to worship on hillsides in big groups. It’s not meditation it’s just about gathering together and listening to each other and to God.’

Jon Martin also referred to Quakers and the abolition movement, businesses like Cadbury’s, and marriage equality. He said: ‘So it is really founded in that belief of equality and living out your faith.’
