The Twelfth International Permaculture Conference took place at Friends House

Friends were among the speakers at the Twelfth International Permaculture Conference, which took place at Friends House on 8-9 September.

More than a thousand permaculture practitioners and activists attended the event. A hundred listened to Friends Laurie Michaelis and Ed Tyler speak on ‘Quakers as a Self-Designing Community’.

This was one of three talks on the theme of ‘Building community’, Ed told the Friend. He added that the aim of the talk was ‘to get across what is common to both Quakers and permaculturists, and to outline distinctive Quaker practices that are of relevance to permaculture’.

The talk was enthusiastically received, Ed said, prompting ‘rich conversations with both Quakers and non-Quakers’ over the course of the two-day event and through the five-day convergence that followed it.

Permaculture involves the design of land, buildings and communities for diverse yields and a sustainable, resilient planet.
