Quakers and Europe
Friends in Lancaster met to discuss Britain's membership of the European Union
Quakers in Lancaster addressed some of the key issues relating to membership of the European Union at an event held in Lancaster Meeting House on Sunday 13 March.
Jane Taylor, of Lancaster Meeting, said: ‘We were a small but engaged group. Two Friends with strong connections with Europe spoke of their “instinct” and “emotional reasons” for Britain’s remaining in Europe: the European countries were our neighbours, and it felt only right to stay with them.’
Extracts from a pamphlet produced by a new advocacy group, ‘Quakers for Europe’, were read and discussed.
‘What became very clear,’ Jane added, ‘was that Friends felt that it was very important that both sides of the “argument” were expressed, rather than just one.’
An Area Day has been arranged to discuss the forthcoming referendum on membership of the European Union.
