Quaker witness at Burghfield
Quakers will be part of a peace witness at the Burghfield nuclear warheads factory in Berkshire
Quakers will be part of a peace witness at the Burghfield nuclear warheads factory in Berkshire on Monday 2 September. A group of protesters intend to nonviolently blockade the two gates of the factory, where work is being done on the final assembly and maintenance of Britain’s nuclear warheads, and Friends taking part will be holding a Meeting for Worship.
This ‘Big Blockade’ is part of the Action AWE (Atomic Weapons Eradication) Disarmament Camp, which is taking place near the factory from 26 August to 7 September.
Owen Everett, a Quaker Peace & Social Witness peaceworker and an attender at Watford Meeting, is organising the Meeting for Worship.
He explained: ‘The Meeting for Worship, which will be held at 11am, will not be blocking a public highway, so those taking part should not be at risk of arrest.’
He said: ‘Many Quakers are fundamentally opposed to nuclear weapons and especially to their renewal. It is all the more important to show our opposition to them at this time and being part of the peace camp is doing this. It also an affirmation of a positive alternative.’
He added: ‘The Meeting for Worship, for me, is very important. It’s a powerful statement of our Quaker witness. If Friends are interested in taking part they can email me at owen_everett@hotmail.co.uk.’
