Joe Coffin named Deafblind Person of the Year

by The Friend Newsdesk 12th October 2012

Joe Coffin from Birmingham has been named Deafblind Person of the Year in the 2012 Sense awards.  Joe, a member of Cotteridge Meeting in Central England Area Meeting, was presented with the award at a ceremony in London on Thursday 4 October.

Born partially deaf, Joe had an infection in his thirties that left him severely visually impaired. He moved into a Birmingham residential care home in 2003 and last year moved into his own flat with support from the charity Sense.

Joe works two or three mornings a week as a volunteer at the Sense offices in Birmingham helping with reception, organising rotas and other administration tasks. He has done this since 2009 and his volunteer work was cited as a reason for his winning the award.

The Sense awards are given in recognition of exceptional achievements by deafblind people and their supporters who have campaigned, volunteered and worked, often for decades.
