Quaker speaks on Greenham for Chichester peace lecture
'Sue discussed the motivations of the women involved in the camp and how it became woman-only.'
A Quaker who is writing a novel about the Greenham Common Peace Camp gave the Chichester Friends’ Annual Peace Lecture to coincide with Remembrance Day.
Around sixty people gathered for the blended (online and in-person) event to hear Sue Curd from Littlehampton Meeting talk on the camp’s fortieth anniversary.
Clerk Bill McMellon told the Friend that Sue discussed ‘the motivations of the women involved in the camp and how it became woman-only.
‘At that time fears of nuclear war were increased by the way in which Cruise Missiles, capable of massive destruction, were moved into the American base at Greenham without so much as a parliamentary debate. Sue discussed the energetic efforts of the women at Greenham to publicise these frightening developments against sometimes strong opposition.
‘This was an inspiring talk about a group of women who were themselves inspiring in their commitment, stretching for long years, to the cause of peace.’
