Governors of Quaker schools met at a recent conference

How boarders are best integrated into Quaker schools was one of the themes of the recent conference of governors of Quaker schools.  The conference, which was held at the end of February at the University of Warwick’s Scarman Conference Centre, was addressed by Stuart Westley, of the Association of Governing Bodies of Independent Schools, and Mike Shaw, head of boarding at Bootham School in York.

Mike Shaw spoke about whether enough was being done to prepare young people, many of whom come from cultures in which rote learning is the norm, to cope with the independent learning that is required at a British university.

Stuart Westley highlighted the subject of inspection in schools.

The conference continued the trend of recent years in spending less time and energy on ‘training’ issues and more on discussion of topics raised by delegates.

It was, a representative said, ‘a valuable opportunity to share good practice and to discuss ways in which we can promote the education we offer by collaborating on projects which demonstrate our Quaker values.’
