Quaker Council for European Affairs (QCEA) and Quaker United Nations Office (QUNO) have contributed to a new United Nations report into systemic racism.

Staff at QCEA submitted a paper of recommendations, after the office of the high commissioner for human Rights called for inputs.

The paper can be read on QCEA’s website and include recommendations such as: addressing racial injustice and misconduct among law enforcement officers in Europe, and the blurred line between the police and the military.

The report is called ‘Promotion and protection of the human rights and fundamental freedoms of Africans and of people of African descent against excessive use of force and other human rights violations by law enforcement officers’.

Launching the report in June, Michelle Bachelet, UN high commissioner for human rights, called for states to adopt a ‘transformative agenda’ to uproot systemic racism.

QCEA welcomed the report and its ‘radical language’, saying: ‘The hope now is that states will adopt the steps recommended… and that this will be the first step towards dismantling afrophobia and systemic racism.’
