The founder of the Big Issue Group John Bird will feature in the third Quaker Question Time.

Speaking at the online event on 16 September, the House of Lords member will outline his campaign to pass a Wellbeing of Future Generations Bill in the UK parliament.

According to the Big Issue magazine, the private member’s bill is driven by the idea that ‘tackling the big issues…  such as the climate crisis and poverty requires long-term thinking that is at odds with the five-year election cycle’.

Speaking on BBC Question Time in February 2020, John Bird, who was once homeless in his youth, said rough sleeping is a ‘human rights abuse’. He told the audience that Britain was facing a rough sleeping crisis created by austerity.

He said: ‘If you are a rough sleeper for a couple of months it takes years to get it out of you. Just a couple of weeks will disenfranchise you in many ways.’
