Exeter Quakers hosted a Quaker ‘Question Time’ this month, featuring Exeter MP Ben Bradshaw and East Devon MP Simon Jupp.

The two politicians spoke about nuclear peace, climate crisis, Palestine and refugees, in what Exeter Friend Ian Martin described as ‘a spirit of challenge and respect’.

Friend Laura Conyngham said: ‘I am still excited about having chaired this meeting for our city’s MPs, on four passionately important topics with more than fifty Friends, including from Exmouth and Sidmouth Meetings in East Devon, with still time for two more questions from “the floor”. It worked brilliantly on Zoom and shows Quakers at our best.’

Ian Martin, who prepared the event on 11 May, added: ‘Exeter Quakers is one of the more active Quaker Meetings in party politics in the UK. Three members stood for Parliament in 2017, for three different political parties. Ten years years ago four members out of forty councillors in total, were Exeter City councillors. We share our experience of engaging with Exeter’s MPs hoping other meetings might look to engage with their own MPs in a similar way.’
