Quaker prison chaplain awarded OBE

‘Chaplains appearing with a pair of luminous orange socks is a beginning of a friendship.'

A Quaker chaplain for Wandsworth Prison has been awarded the British Empire Medal in the New Year Honours 2022 list.

Liz Bridge – listed as Patrica Elizabeth Bridge – was made a medallist of the Order of the British Empire (BEM) for services to prisoners.

Keith Walton, from Hammersmith Meeting, told the Friend: ‘Liz is very pleased the word Quaker is in [the sitation]and thanked everyone for help with jigsaws, socks and hats etc. (She bought several kilos of real coffee for us at Wandsworth Meeting to celebrate after Meeting on several Sundays.) I really do think this is a huge mark of respect for all that Liz has achieved.’

Liz Bridge reached the target of 14,000 pairs of socks to hand out to men jailed at Wandsworth in December. ‘Chaplains appearing with a pair of luminous orange socks is a beginning of a friendship. It creates a feeling that there are people on the inside who will help a bit,’ she told the Friend last month.
