Quaker photographer given national recognition

Quaker photographer recognised by the Victoria and Albert Museum

The distinctive photography of Quaker and lecturer John Arnison has been recognised by the Victoria and Albert Museum.

The Kensington-based museum recently accepted his highly acclaimed images of waterfalls in Yorkshire into their photography collection.

The Leeds Friend, who is a lecturer in photography at the Leeds College of Art, took the photographs of waterfalls in the night during long excursions to remote locations in the Yorkshire countryside.

This involved him hiking for hours to reach each waterfall. On one occasion, in order to achieve the image he wanted, he even abseiled to access a waterfall.

His chosen scenes were lit using handheld torches and with the help of an assistant. The nocturnal setting and difficulty in accessing some of the locations have made his ‘Waterfalls’ series a particularly unusual depiction of the British landscape.
