Quaker peace campaigner wins compensation

A Quaker peace campaigner has been granted an out-of-court settlement four years after being run over while at a peace demonstration at RAF Menwith Hill

A Quaker peace campaigner who claimed she was deliberately run over by a car has been awarded £15,000 in compensation after a long-standing fight for justice.

Seventy-one-year-old Barbara Penny suffered major injuries at a peace demonstration at the US military base RAF Menwith Hill, near Harrogate, when an employee of the site ran her over with his car as he left. The member of Harrogate Meeting, who was a regular demonstrator at the site, suffered a badly broken ankle, head injuries and damage to her lymph channels on 11 August 2015. The man was arrested and accused of causing grievous bodily harm, but was acquitted at Leeds Crown Court.

After being granted an out-of-court settlement of £15,000, Barbara Penny said: ‘Nearly four years after this happened, I have finally felt able to return as a witness for peace at the spy base.’
