Quaker MP Ruth Cadbury launched a blistering attack on Boris Johnson, the incoming prime minister, at Theresa May’s final prime minister’s questions (PMQs). The Labour MP for Brentford and Isleworth asked the then prime minister how she felt about handing over to ‘a man who, among many things, is happy to demonise Muslims, is prepared to chuck our loyal public servants and diplomats under a bus, and promises to sell our country out to Donald Trump and his friends’.

According to Ruth Cadbury, ‘the prime minister failed to respond to [the] points… and offered platitudes about the Conservative Party’. But Theresa May pointedly did not praise the incoming prime minister.

Ruth Cadbury later said: ‘Boris Johnson is simply unfit to be prime minister. Whether it was his wasteful vanity projects as the mayor of London… or his failure as foreign secretary, it’s clear that he simply does not have the skills or sense of responsibility to be prime minister. On top of that Boris Johnson wants to crash us out of the EU without a deal; which will damage our economy, cripple our businesses and limit the tools available to our police.’

Elsewhere, Friends were among the crowds in London on 24 July to protest against Boris Johnson. Quaker Emma Dunmore told the Friend that she was at the protests because she wanted to represent the many people who feel angry about the appointment. ‘I didn’t think it would change anything, but it was to visually manifest our resistance,’ she said.
