Friends continued their support of the Extinction Rebellion (XR) demonstrations across London last week with a range of protests that included blockading roads and targeting the London Stock Exchange (LSE).

Quaker James Deane, of Central Meeting in Bristol, who was arrested and released without charge for the partially naked XR protest at the House of Commons last month, told the Friend: ‘I think the city is feeling us today. There are lots of bemused bystanders and people thanking us, saying it is necessary and the only way to get the corporations to listen to us.’

James Deane was in ‘a legal observing role’ at the LSE on 24 April when the entrances were blocked with people wearing black suits and dressed as ‘robocops’. He said this was to show ‘this automated system is alien to what we need in the world and we need more humanity’.

He added: ‘We’re causing temporary disruption to get people’s attention. The idea is that when people are disrupted they change their behaviour.’
