Quaker Housing Trust (QHT) has said that a fall in donations is limiting their ability to meet the demand for their funding support.

The group made awards totalling £171,191 in 2022, with projects in Scotland including Street Connect Glasgow’s proposal to buy a two-bedroom flat for individuals affected by drug and alcohol addictions. QHT also provided a grant and loan for Common Ground on Homelessness Edinburgh to buy a house and convert it into eight self-contained flats for people moving on from homelessness. Meanwhile, Strathglass and Affric Community Group were supported to convert a former doctor’s surgery into two family homes for key workers to support a ‘fragile, rural community’ with little affordable housing, mostly due to holiday homes.

Edinburgh Quakers highlighted the issue in this month’s Terrace Talk newsletter: ‘There are brilliant charities out there creating housing and we would like to support more of them. In recent years, there has been a significant fall in donations made by Meetings and Friends which severely limits our ability to make awards. Regular donations [and legacies] would increase the number of projects we can fund.’

Mark Bitel, clerk of QHT, spoke to this appeal at Central Edinburgh Meeting on 5 February.

Set up in 1967, QHT provides grants and loans for social housing projects for those in genuine housing need.
