Quaker group wins Stonewall award
Quaker Lesbian & Gay Fellowship named Community Group of the Year by Stonewall
The Quaker Lesbian & Gay Fellowship (QLGF) has been named Community Group of the Year by the gay campaigning group Stonewall for its long-standing commitment to equality.
Elisabeth Sutherland and Paul Campion of QLGF, picked up the award and a cheque for £5,000 at an awards ceremony in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London on 7 November.
In accepting the award they quoted from Towards a Quaker View of Sex, a report by a group of Quakers published in 1963: ‘surely it is the nature and quality of a relationship that matters; one must not judge by its outward appearance but its inner worth’. QLGF was formed ten years after the report’s publication. It was one of the first religious groups for gay people in the UK and is winning the award in its fortieth year. Paul and Elisabeth thanked Stonewall on behalf of the Quakers ‘who for so many years have supported equality for everyone, regardless of sexual orientation’.
They received a standing ovation.
