The Retreat, the Quaker mental health hospital in York, has won the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ ‘Team of the Year’ award for 2013.

The award went to the team working in the specialist eating disorder unit. They were congratulated by Louis Appleby, the government’s national director for mental health and professor of psychiatry at the University of Manchester, on their dedication, expertise, innovation and life-changing outcomes.

Receiving the award on behalf of the team, consultant psychiatrist Andrea Brown said: ‘The success of the unit is down to every member of the team who care so deeply about the work they do. Eating disorders are often difficult for people to talk about and we hope the publicity this award generates will encourage people to seek the help and advice they need to get better.’

The unit offers fifteen NHS – funded inpatient beds to women recovering from a variety of eating disorders. It combines specialist psychiatry, psychology and nursing with occupational therapy and social work to help patients overcome what can be a serious and life-threatening condition.
