Quaker Studies Research Association holds annual conference

‘Nonconformist responses to the world war one’ was the theme for the Quaker Studies Research Association’s annual conference.

The conference took place at the Woodbrooke Quaker Study Centre in Birmingham from 15 to 16 September. Speakers included Jo-Ann Curtis, of the Birmingham Museums Trust, who spoke on Quakers’ response to Belgian refugees in Birmingham during the first world war. Penelope Cummins, of the University of Birmingham, discussed the Religious Society of Friends’ response to the Military Service Act of 1916. Nan Macy, of Bellingham, Washington, gave a presentation on ‘Farming for peace: An American Quaker conscientious objector in world war one France’.

The 2015 George Richardson Lecture was delivered by Brycchan Carey, of Kingston University, Surrey, on ‘From friendly advice to historical account: Thomas Tryon, Anthony Benezet and the origins of antislavery’.
