QSA ramps up mobile library for winter homelessness
Homelessness is a year-round problem, and we intend to run Turn a Corner all year round.'
Quaker Social Action (QSA) has said that it is ‘ramping up’ its mobile library service Turn a Corner for the winter months, as charities brace for a rise in homelessness.
he decision comes as poverty campaigners warn against an increase in homeless figures this winter. Thousands of people risk losing their home, say charities, after support introduced during the pandemic such as the £20 universal credit increase and the furlough scheme have been withdrawn.
Giles Robinson, from QSA, told the Friend that over the winter months the Turn A Corner service will increase the amount of resources and donated items handed out to visitors. He said: ‘People can find out what is needed and make donations on the website. The rounds/presence are not being increased in the winter period.’
The central London service offers a free library lending service which requires no fixed address or membership to borrow a book. It also offers donated items such as sleeping bags, clothing and hygiene products. It currently visits three central London locations, each on a weekly basis.
Peter Christmas, head of fundraising and communications for QSA, said: ‘Homelessness is a year-round problem, and we intend to run Turn a Corner all year round; we aim to continue evolving the service as we learn from the people affected by homelessness whom we meet.’
