QSA in funeral poverty push
QSA encourages Friends to support a Funeral Poverty Bill
Quaker Social Action (QSA) wants UK voters to encourage their MPs to support a Funeral Poverty Bill.
The Bill will be presented in parliament on 9 December by Labour MP Emma Lewell-Buck. It calls on the government to carry out a major review of the causes and solutions to funeral poverty.
One in five people now struggle to pay for their funeral or that of a relative, according to QSA. Some are turning to high-interest ‘payday’ loans, while others are selling their possessions to cover the cost. Over 100,000 people in Britain are living with funeral debt, the charity added.
QSA has been campaigning against funeral poverty for several years. It won the Guardian Charity Award 2012 for its ‘Down to Earth’ project, which helps people on low incomes arrange affordable funerals for family members.
