QCEA raises €2,000 for refugee charity
QCEA and MEP Magid Magid raised funds for Refugee Rescue
Quaker Council for European Affairs (QCEA) and a Green MEP joined forces this month to raise €2,000 for a refugee charity.
Fifty people came to a fundraising dinner held by QCEA and newly elected UK MEP Magid Magid in aid of Refugee Rescue, a small humanitarian group.
The charity, based on the Greek island of Lesvos, bought a boat several years ago to rescue migrants struggling to cross the Mediterranean.
Martin Leng, communications and fundraising coordinator for QCEA, told the Friend that the event was part of QCEA’s political outreach work to connect with people who may be political allies. He said: ‘Magid Magid is a former refugee from Somali who came to the UK as a child. A few other MEPs came and lots of staff from political advocacy organisations such as Islamic Relief and ACT Alliance, a climate justice group.’ The evening included food from a Syrian group called We Exist, which specialises in Syrian cuisine.
