Quaker business people have called for new laws against corporate tax avoidance

Quaker business people have called for new laws against corporate tax avoidance. The Quakers & Business Group (Q&B) wrote to George Osborne to ask for ‘changes to UK law and regulation which would encourage companies to pay their taxes in full’.

They declare: ‘With others, we Quakers regard paying tax as good, because it is how the community is supported… We regard avoiding paying tax as a way of privatising money due to the community… The beneficiaries of corporate tax avoidance are the already richer sections of the community.’

The group make six detailed suggestions for changes that would curb tax dodging.

They include requiring companies to publish more detailed tax records; a general anti-avoidance provision that allows the revenue to enforce the ‘spirit of the law’; and more onerous penalties for not paying tax at the due rate. They also want the government to be more active in pushing for international agreements to prevent tax avoidance.

The letter was copied to the prime minister, deputy prime minister and leader of the opposition.
