David Keating wonders when a Tory will be invited to speak at Yearly Meeting

Whilst visiting a Meeting in England a few months ago, a Friend’s ministry was highly critical of current government policy on the matter of state benefits and greatly supportive of Labour party criticism. During the subsequent coffee session I asked another Friend whether she thought a Tory could be a Friend. With a look of utter astonishment, she simply said ‘I should hardly think so’ with such firmness that I did not dare pursue the question. In attending the occasional Britain Yearly Meeting I have observed that whilst Labour party politicians often speak, I do not recall a Conservative party politician doing so. Articles in the Friend seem to me to reflect a recognisably left wing view. I must confess that I was, therefore, somewhat surprised to see an advertisement in The Spectator, during a recent outreach campaign, seeking enquiries about being a Quaker.
