Clarion the Polar Bear, the giant sculpture created by Quaker artist Bamber Hawes, arrived in Glasgow this week, just in time for COP26. The giant bear arrived after Quaker assistance helped him scale the highest part of his 306-mile trek.

Terry Winterton, friend in residence at Glenthorne Guest House and Conference Centre, told the Friend that Quakers helped the ten foot (three metre) bear ‘navigate the highest part of the whole 306-mile walk at Gatescarth pass (572m) on 23 October’. He said that earlier this month Clarion ‘went through Kendal and got a good article in the Westmorland Gazette’.

The bear is made from bamboo, willow and tissue paper.

Bamber Hawes, from Clun Valley Meeting, told the Friend in September: ‘Walking to the climate talks will not change the world, but I can think of nothing better to do to show the earnestness of my belief that we must learn to talk together and build community. Only in Oneness will we make a better, more just, world.’
