Poetry anthology launched
The 'Worn with Pride' anthology has been supported by East Cheshire Area Meeting
A new anthology of poetry supported by Friends was launched in Macclesfield on 29 November.
Over the past year members of East Cheshire Area Meeting’s Peace Group have been introducing pupils to the dilemmas of war.
John Lindley, a former poet laureate of Cheshire, was engaged to lead workshops in five Macclesfield secondary schools and used a variety of media – peace songs, tribunal re-enactments and testimonies from conscientious objectors – to encourage the pupils to imagine the stark choices people had to make in times of war. The pupils, aged between thirteen and fourteen, responded by writing poems that have now been brought together in an anthology entitled Worn with Pride.
Taylor Giacoma, a professional musician and East Cheshire Friend, has set six of the poems to music and they were performed at the official launch. After a short film about conscription some of the pupils read their poetry.
