'I never knew you were a Quaker.' Photo: The Chelsea Meeting, Nelson Dawson, 1891.
Poem: Friend
Poem by RV Bailey
I never knew you were a Quaker.
I might have guessed.
A silence in the midst of argument;
A pause for thought.
A sense that something else was going on
Quietly, all the time.
You never said, of course: not-saying
Was part of who you were.
Behind the scenes something
Was taken for granted,
And though I didn’t understand
I never felt shut out.
I’d like to come with you to Meeting.
Are they all like you?
And are you quite sure they won’t
Mind if I do?

The painting captures the atmosphere of Meeting for Worship perfectly and the words sum up the reaction many of us have heard. This is one of those poems I wish I had written! Thank you for sharing with us.
