Poem: A Gathered Meeting

Poem by Clare Wigzell

by Clare Wigzell 19th November 2021

Written in response to the Dovetailing art installation
at Farfield Quaker Meeting House, July 2021.

Each time, from a new page, stillness
uncoils from within me, to hang,
suspended, in the Meeting’s light.

In the silence, it twists slowly, caught
in the open window’s wind, zinging
as it catches sudden sunlight.

It quivers as a mountain taking in
breath, emitting a long low soundless note
that resonates deep in the chest.

Curved into an ancient hieroglyph,
it throws meanings in shadow
on the plain white walls.

It is part of a verdant canopy,
all the people’s leaves flittering,
luminous, reeking of sap.
