Pickering Friends take stand on fracking
Pickering Quakers write to press about fracking in North Yorkshire
Friends from Pickering, North Yorkshire, have written to a regional newspaper to voice their dismay at a recent decision regarding fracking.
In a letter to The Press, a York publication, Friends wrote that they felt ‘moved to speak out collectively’ against the decision of the North Yorkshire County Council planning group to approve the application by gas development firm Third Energy to start fracking at Kirby Misperton.
The letter explained that members of Pickering Meeting had ‘individually logged objections alongside over 4,300 friends and neighbours in and around [their] community, based on careful consideration of the evidence for and against the technology.’
It continued: ‘Despite the local decision about fracking, we can and will continue to promote the development of sustainable energy and reduce our dependence on a product which threatens the environment for future generations.
‘We rejoice in the beauty and variety of our incredible world, and seek to maintain it in all its splendour,’ the letter concluded. It was signed by clerk Phyllis Wicks on behalf of Pickering Meeting.
