Philadelphia Quakers in Penn tribute
The 370th anniversary of William Penn’s birth was marked by Friends in Philadelphia
The 370th anniversary of William Penn’s birth was marked by two days of events at the historic Arch Street Meeting House in Philadelphia.
The celebration took place on 24 and 25 October. Events included a presentation on Penn’s life, describing how becoming a Quaker led him to found Pennsylvania and Philadelphia. Some 125 people attended. Family-friendly activities included making Quaker bonnets.
The Arch Street Meeting House was built in 1804 by Owen Biddle, Jr, on a burial ground originally deeded to the Quakers by William Penn. It has been an active Meeting house for more than two centuries. The organisers of this year’s celebration hope to make it an annual event, to help raise funds for the building’s preservation.
