Petition against thanksgiving service for sea deterrents

A service of thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey has been condemned by Quakers and other Christians

Friends have joined other Christians in condemning a service at Westminster Abbey to mark fifty years of the UK having nuclear weapons at sea.

The invitation to the event on 3 May, which has been seen by Christian Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), describes the event as a ‘National Service of Thanksgiving to mark fifty years of the Continuous at Sea Deterrent (CASD)’.

Christian CND has petitioned against the event and said: ‘The decision to host this service in Westminster Abbey is, we believe, contrary to the motion passed by the Church of England General Synod in July 2018. That motion says that “nuclear weapons, through their indiscriminate and destructive potential, present a distinct category of weaponry that requires Christians to work tirelessly for their elimination across the world”.’ BYM is expected to write to the Abbey dean to question the service.
