Perspectives of belief

Michael Wright reports on the recent conference of the Nontheist Friends Network

Nontheism can be a puzzling and controversial concept to some people. At the recent weekend conference of the Nontheist Friends Network entitled ‘Nontheism among Quakers and beyond’, which was held at the Woodbrooke Quaker Study Centre, perspectives of belief were looked at in some detail.  The vicar of the university church in Oxford, Brian Mountford, spoke of the tension between pre-modern and post-modern views of religion. His book Christian Atheism: Belonging without believing reflects views of practicing church members who remain loyal to their membership even when they have left God behind. The binding attachments are to their religious community, to the moral compass that gives them, and to the aesthetics of the spiritual life – prayer, music, art and architecture.
