Jonathan Doering tells the story of an unexpected guest and his vision

The telephone rings one afternoon: ‘Hello, Jonathan. This is Lucas. I’m a peace pilgrim from Holland…’

Unable to contact our Local Meeting clerk, who is away visiting family, Lucas has tried me, and asks if I might be able to provide a bed for the night. A small favour, but I still hesitate. Our son is getting over a sickness bug, but Lucas is sanguine, so that evening a tall figure appears at the top of our street, rolling a canary-yellow submarine. We live in a quiet neighbourhood, but my wife and I both wonder if high-spirited passersby will be tempted to wheel it down the road if it isn’t locked up. (It’s too large to put in our hallway or manoeuvre up the side alley.) Lucas shrugs: ‘I don’t think anyone’s likely to want to steal a yellow submarine.’
