Peace walk in Southampton
Friends took part in a Peace Walk arranged by the Southampton Council of Faiths
Quakers from Bournemouth Coastal Area Meeting and Hampshire and Islands Area Meeting joined around sixty people on an annual Peace Walk through Southampton this month.
The walk on 7 July, organised by the Southampton Council of Faiths, started with words of welcome and encouragement from the mayor, councillor Peter Baillie, at the Peace Fountain in Southampton. According to Helen Carter-Shaw, of Bournemouth Coastal Area Meeting, they ‘journeyed through the city spreading the message of breaking down barriers and embracing multiculturalism, by visiting the Medina Mosque, Namaskar Gurdwara, Southampton Synagogue, Friends Meeting House and Central Baptist Church’.
She said: ‘For many, it was their first time in a religious building not connected with their own faith and an opportunity to find out about other faiths. It was emphasised that “earth is one country and humankind its citizen” and that “we all look at the one light. We may see it through a different window – but it is still the same light”.’
