Friends were among those who attended the Peace Pledge Union annual conference

Friends took part in the Peace Pledge Union (PPU) annual conference this month to explore what solidarity means in practice and how to adapt national or international campaigns to local contexts.

Speakers at the ‘Local to Global: Solidarity for Peace’ conference on 1 June at Friends House included Melanie Strickland from the Stansted group of protestors who emphasised the need to offer meaningful solidarity, rather than trying to ‘save’ people from the outside. The pacifist activist Maya Evans, who has worked with Afghan pacifists in Kabul, took part in a panel debate with Richard Barnard, who was recently arrested in an Extinction Rebellion protest, and Rachel Melly, an LGBTQ rights campaigner from York.

Richard Barnard said he would like Extinction Rebellion to be more aware of peace and poverty, and encouraged the peace movement to take more account of climate change activism.

The conference followed an AGM in which PPU members challenged themselves to live in alignment with their values within their own organisation.
