An exhibition marking the anniversary of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) opened at the Peace Museum in Bradford on 12 January – sixty years after the organisation was founded.

The event chronicles CND’s history through banners, badges and other artefacts from its collection, spanning six decades, and will conclude at the end of February to coincide with its sixtieth anniversary.

Curator Charlotte Hall told the Friend: ‘We wanted to create an exhibition highlighting the different aspects of CND that we had in our collections to coincide with the sixtieth anniversary celebrations on 17 February, which CND are celebrating in London with a big event. The aim was to create a timeline stretching from 1958, when they first began, to the 2016 Stop Trident campaign in London.’

She added: ‘We’ve bought together hundreds of objects, including an original copy of the design of the CND symbol by artist Gerald Holtom, which he never copyrighted, which is why you see it everywhere.

‘There are various posters, lots of badges and old membership cards, as well as some amazing banners made by different CND groups. There’s also lots of memorabilia from the Aldermaston March in 1958, where several thousand people marched for four days from Trafalgar Square to the Atomic Weapons Establishment in Aldermaston, Berkshire.’

The CND sixtieth year celebrations are in Bradford on 17 February, where the Peace Museum will be running a ‘bring-your-own-museum’ workshop to which CND members can take their memorabilia. There will also be food, short films, music and singing.

Peace Museum trustee Laura Padgett gave a talk at Bradford Civic Hall this week on the future plans of the museum, where she announced an open consultation on ideas for future developments.
