The Peace Hub in Birmingham has chosen ‘Think Global, Act Local, Get Equal’ as its theme for September and October.

Peter Doubtfire, coordinator at the Hub, a Central England Area Meeting project, explained that the theme is inspired by the UN International Day of Peace, held on 21 September, which will focus on ‘Sustainable development goals (SDGs): building blocks for peace’.

Peter said: ‘We wanted to make a link between global efforts to achieve economic equality, like the SDGs or tax justice, and projects that aim to make sure the benefits of economic development are
shared out fairly at a local level.’

A drive to encourage people to support the introduction of a ‘Birmingham Pound’, which would help money circulate around the local economy and help small businesses, is among the activities being done.

On Peace Day, Peacemakers (members of West Midlands Quaker Peace Education Project) will welcome schoolchildren to the Peace Hub for workshops. Participants will think about how the SDGs relate to peace, and consider what they can do to make peaceful changes in their own school communities.
